The Community of Plainfield, Indiana is very proud of its local schools and the opportunities available to its young people. The Plainfield High School and Middle School Band program is one such program in our school that continues to excel in opening up new horizons to Plainfield students. But, a band is unique in that it can also be a source of great pride to a community as well as an ambassador for the community around the state and country. The band program enthusiastically embraces these responsibilities and challenges.
The instrumental music program at Plainfield High School has a wide range of activities with an extensive performance schedule to enrich the lives of hundreds of students involved in the band program grades 6 – 12. Included in the program are marching band, 7 concert band classes, pep bands, jazz bands, pit orchestra, percussion studio ensembles, indoor percussion ensembles, numerous small ensembles, color guard, and winter guard. These groups perform on and average of 60 times each year at school and community functions, parades, local, state, national, and international competitions, and concerts.
The Plainfield band has been successful in marching band competitions earning a Gold division ratings at regional contests each year since the early 1980’s and placing in the ISSMA State Finals several times including 1982, 1983, 1985, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2017 when they won their first State Championship.
The Plainfield High School and Middle School concert bands have consistently earned Gold division ratings at state organization contests. The band program places emphasis on solo and ensemble performance with a majority of students excelling at the district and state level.
The PHS Winter Percussion Ensembles have been a state finalist in IPA for several years. The movement percussion ensemble has won state championships in 2006, 2014, and 2018. In 2005 the movement percussion ensemble placed 4th at the WGI World Championships PSA 4 Place and was also a finalist in 2006.
The PHS Winter Guard Program consists of a Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Middle School Guards. They have also seen a lot of success over the years earning a spot at state finals several years. The Varsity Guard recently earned a spot at the WGI Indy Regional competition in 2018 for the first time.
The band represents the school and community in front of thousands of people by its many local, state, and national performances in Toronto, St. Louis, Louisville, and Orlando.
